A Brief Guide To Gourmet Popcorn Denver

By Linda Ruiz

While there have been recorded instances of people eating it throughout history popcorn first became a popular and widespread snack during the Depression. It became synonymous with the movies because it was a cheap food to buy and you could spend a long time watching movies, newsreels and cartoons for a small amount of money. Today popcorn may not necessarily be cheap but it still has an image of something light and insubstantial and is often one of the first things people think of when it comes to getting a snack at the movies. However this does not necessarily have to be the case as there are a growing number of gourmet popcorn Denver producers.

As a foodstuff this snack has been around for centuries. Some research even suggests that it may well have been served at the first Thanksgiving. Others suggest the eating of heated kernels of corn may go back even further. However our modern day association with the snack and cinema goes back to around the Thirties in the United States.

Times have changed since then. While popcorn can no longer be considered cheap it still has that image to an extent. Indeed some critics will often use the word in order to deride films that they consider to be catering to a mass crowd, with the light and air popped snack seemingly an ideal metaphor for any insubstantial blockbuster that they are reviewing.

Another difference is in the shape. There are two main shapes. One is known as the mushroom variety and the other is known as the butterfly. As the names suggest one resembles a mushroom and the other looks like a butterfly. You often find out which one you have after you start popping them.

This different process also changes the texture. It becomes chewier and less crunchy than the kind you would normally get when buying something to sit in front of the screen. Some people prefer this texture and others do not. As with anything it is a matter of trying it, with producers often looking to put out a unique product.

Another change is the flavours. Generally speaking the gourmet version will usually avoid artificial toppings. However this should not be confused with a lack of flavour and indeed it is often the opposite as a lot of companies use natural flavours and ingredients to offer a wider array of varieties. These can include flavours such as Thai sweet chilli, pesto or brie!

What you may not know is that there are potential health benefits as well. This will depend on how the companies produce their snacks. Some companies do not add butter in order to reduce the amount of calories. Some studies have also suggested that this more natural cooking process is better for the digestive system.

It has to be emphasised that there are a lot of different types of gourmet popcorn available. As well as different flavours there are different methods of production and producers. It is worth looking online to find out what is available in your local area as well as looking for online retailers. You can also look to see if reviewers have tested the products and get their feedback before you buy!
