Tips On Emergency Food And Water Items

By Eric Holm

There are many things that a person will need to survive, with food and water being the most important. All human beings must have access to groceries that can provide adequate nutrition, and water to hydrate the body. Most will take their access to these basic needs for granted, that is, until a natural or man made disaster has taken place which can make these items more difficult to come by. These situations tend to be dangerous and even deadly, and having the appropriate emergency supplies will be necessary in order to care for yourself and others.

Unfortunately, it is difficult and even impossible to fully prepare for such a crisis. After all, they tend to strike very suddenly with no warning and no opportunity to get prepared. Many will not survive such an occasion simply because they do not have the most basic of supplies available. Sources of nutrition and hydration are absolutely vital for these circumstances, and those who take the necessary steps to prepare for these events will always stand a much better chance of survival. Many companies, aided by advanced technology, have made available a wide variety of crisis products that can easily be stored for an extended period of time. Many products may be stored for 5 years and even longer. Other products can help with preserving typical household food items such as dried, dehydrated, and frozen foods.

Emergency water can be purchased in sturdy plastic containers, which usually have a 5 year shelf life as well, and a purifier can be kept in your disaster kit to ensure emergency drinking water. If a disaster catches you suddenly and you are without clean water you can use sources in your home like water in your hot water tank, ice cubes, and water from house pipes and faucets. In addition, there are alternative sources available outside your home which includes rainwater, streams, rivers, ponds and lakes, and natural springs. Generally, a 3 day supply of food and water is recommended to keep on hand for every individual in your family or group. Below are some helpful suggestions.

One great habit is to begin picking up a few extra items every time you go to the grocery store. This habit can quickly help in stockpiling additional supplies. Most will store enough to last for about three days, however, experts recommend storing enough supplies to last for 2-3 months at a time should the occasion call for it. Although this is a completely personal decision, it is better to be safe than sorry. Consider things like rice, beans, and wheat. These can be put away for very long time periods while still retaining their nutritional value. Be sure to monitor all items and be aware of both the purchase and expiration dates. Use masking tape and permanent markers to clearly label the products with all relevant information.

Remember to always prepare enough supplies for at least a three day time period. It is even better to stockpile enough emergency food and water supplies to last weeks and even months. Doing so can help you and your family in survive even the most harrowing of conditions.
